The Consumer Cellular IRIS Easy Flip is a $59.00 clamshell phone. It has two 2.8" screens, a 5MP camera and USB-C charging. Consumer Cellular also sells a newer IRIS Easy Flip 2 at $99.99.

The two share a name and very little published detail. This review covers both, and it says plainly which facts we could confirm.

Which IRIS flip phone are you looking at?

Start here, because the names cause most of the confusion. The IRIS Easy Flip is the older phone. It costs $59.00 and it is still on sale. The IRIS Easy Flip 2 is the newer one at $99.99. Consumer Cellular sells the second as a made-better version of the first.

A third phone shares the IRIS badge and nothing else. The IRIS Connect 2 is a full touchscreen Android at $149.99. If you wanted a phone that flips shut, that is not the one.

What are the differences between the IRIS Flip and the IRIS Easy Flip?

Consumer Cellular sells two IRIS flip phones right now. One is the IRIS Easy Flip at $59.00. The other is the IRIS Easy Flip 2 at $99.99. We found no separate model sold as simply the "IRIS Flip".

That name is shopper shorthand for whichever clamshell is in front of them. So the real question is Easy Flip versus Easy Flip 2, and the answer is below.

The Easy Flip 2 adds five things Consumer Cellular names directly. It supports 5G voice calls. The volume keys moved to the front, so they can be reached with the phone closed.

There is a one-button favorites feature and an In-Case-of-Emergency contact. The hinge is described as more durable than the one on the older phone.

That is the whole confirmed list. Everything else you read about the Easy Flip 2 online, including battery and screen numbers, traces back to the older phone. The next two sections separate what is measured from what is missing.

IRIS Easy Flip specifications

These figures come from Consumer Cellular and from the Target spec sheet for the phone. Two entries are marked as secondary, meaning we found them on a review site rather than on a retailer listing.

About that hearing aid rating. Target's spec sheet and one senior-phone review site publish different ratings for this phone. We are not going to pick the flattering one.

If a hearing aid is part of the decision, call Consumer Cellular and get the rating in writing before you buy. A phone that couples badly with a hearing aid is worse than no new phone at all.

What Consumer Cellular does not publish about the Easy Flip 2

The Easy Flip 2 is the phone Consumer Cellular pushes hardest. It is also the one with the thinnest public spec sheet. We could not confirm a battery size, a screen resolution, a standby figure or a hearing aid rating for it. Sites that quote those numbers are quoting the older Easy Flip.

This matters for one practical reason. You are paying $40.99 more than the Easy Flip costs. You deserve to know whether the battery got bigger or stayed the same. Ask that question on the phone with a Consumer Cellular representative, and ask for the hearing aid rating in the same call.

What are some common problems with IRIS Flip phones?

We did not find a body of sourced, verifiable complaints about these phones. We are not going to invent any. What we can do is point at the published specs and name the things worth checking before you pay.

  • •The hearing aid rating is published inconsistently. Confirm it before you buy if it matters.
  • •Storage is 8GB with 1GB of RAM. Photos will fill that. Budget for a microSD card, which the phone accepts up to 128GB.
  • •The battery is 2,000 mAh. That is normal for a flip phone and small for anything else. Expect a charge every few days, not every week.
  • •There is no front camera. Selfies use the outer screen with the phone shut, which takes practice.
  • •The Easy Flip 2 is not listed at Target, Walmart or Amazon. Returns and support for that model route through Consumer Cellular.

Are IRIS phones good?

IRIS is Consumer Cellular's own house brand. Judge it on price and fit rather than on reputation. At $59.00 the Easy Flip is one of the cheapest new flip phones a carrier sells. The hardware is basic and the spec sheet is thin. That is the trade you are making.

We have not held one. Nobody on our desk has run a lab test on it. What we have done is read the published specs against every other flip phone in our flip phone guide. On price, the Easy Flip wins. On documentation, it loses to the Jitterbug phones, which publish full spec sheets.

Can you text on an IRIS Flip phone?

Yes. It is a 4G LTE phone, so standard text messages work normally. Typing happens on the physical number keys, the way feature phones have always worked. We could not verify whether Consumer Cellular ships predictive text on this model.

One thing to weigh honestly. Number-key typing is slow for anyone who texts a lot. If your parent sends a dozen messages a day, a touchscreen keyboard will serve them better. That is the case for the IRIS Connect 2 or a Jitterbug Smart4 instead.

IRIS Easy Flip vs IRIS Connect 2

These two phones get confused constantly, and the shared IRIS name is why. They are not variants of each other. One is a flip phone for calls and texts. The other is a full Android smartphone.

Where to buy the IRIS Easy Flip

Consumer Cellular sells the Easy Flip directly at $59.00. Target and Walmart both carry it as well. Target has listed it at $42.49 against a $49.99 list price, so it is worth checking both before you pay full price at the carrier.

Check Price at Consumer CellularCheck the red Easy Flip on Amazon

Amazon carries the red 4G Easy Flip. Check the listing title before you buy: it reads "Iris Flip 2" because 2 inches is the outside screen, not because it is the Easy Flip 2. The Easy Flip 2 is the 5G model and we could not find it on Amazon at all.

Also stocked at Target and at Walmart.

We earn nothing from the Target and Walmart links above. They are here because those stores genuinely stock the phone and their prices move.

The Easy Flip 2 is a different story. We found no listing for that phone at Target, Walmart or Amazon. Those stores sell cases and chargers for it, not the handset. Buy the Easy Flip 2 from Consumer Cellular.

The verdict

The IRIS Easy Flip is a fair $59.00 flip phone with a documented spec sheet. Two 2.8-inch screens, USB-C charging and a 5MP camera are reasonable at that price. Buy it if you want a cheap, simple phone and you want to know what you are getting.

The Easy Flip 2 asks $40.99 more for five named improvements and almost no published specs. Two of those improvements are real safety features, so it may still be the better buy.

Just call Consumer Cellular first and get the battery figure and the hearing aid rating confirmed. Neither phone competes with the IRIS Connect 2 if what you actually want is a smartphone.
